150 fishermen from Hadhramout get boats engines and fishing nets

On Thursday, April 14, 2022, the YLDF completed the distribution of 50 boats, 50 engines, 50 fishing nets to 150 small fishermen in a number of districts of the coastal Hadhramout governorate.

With this, YLDF has concluded one of the most important activities of RELACC project in Hadhramout.

YLDF has been implementing this project since August 2021 in partnership with the UNDP Yemen and with funding from the Japanese government, and it comes as part of the efforts made by civil society organizations to contain the effects of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, which is known internationally as one of the worst crises in the world.

According to the project plan, every three fishermen will get a boat, an engine, and a net, and the boats are also equipped with refrigerators to keep the fish.

The project is also being implemented in the governorate of Aden, and according to the Amal Alqata’a, the project coordinator: the distribution will be completed in the governorate of Aden next week, and 150 small fishermen there will receive 50 boats with their engines and 50 fishing nets as well.

The project targets 1,000 small fishermen, and in addition to boats and engines, hundreds of fishermen will receive 500 fishing nets and 500 GPS devices that will be distributed equally between Aden and Hadhramout.

The conflict has affected more than 70 percent of small-scale fishers - the backbone of the fisheries sector, and through the Rebuilding Livelihoods and Capacity of Conflict-Affected Small-Fisher Families in Aden and Hadhramout (RELACC) project, fish production is being supported and renewed.

The distribution of boats, engines, fishing nets and GPS will help small-scale fishermen to meet market demand and supply by improving their production and catch rates. Boats equipped with cold storages for fishing will help fishermen solve the problem of cold storage at the production level.
