An Emergency Mission between Mountains and Valleys

In the northwestern part of Dhamar Governorate is Doran Anas District. On an area of varied terrain between rugged mountains and fertile valleys, covering an area of 558 km, the villages of the district are spread, with a population of 121,553 people, according to the 2004 population census. There, too, the manifestations of the humanitarian crisis that has afflicted Yemen for years can be clearly observed. In response to this crisis from a different angle, YLDF, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has developed the “Cash for Work” project, which aims to improve and diversify the income and agricultural livelihoods of food-insecure families through better management of community lands, soils, and water resources in major valleys and mountainous locations. The project targeted the local community and employed 1245 community members to carry out cash-for-work activities in 54 locations. The project came as an emergency livelihood assistance by supporting agricultural inputs and revitalizing the water assets on which local communities depend in the context of halting the deterioration of food security.

Najwa Dubais, an English teacher, spent her life such a profession with limited skills that only allowed her to give classes at institutes and universities. However, Ms. Dubais had a great passion for acquiring new skills that would potentially allow her to make something quite great in her life, develop personally and benefit others too.

Ms. Asma Mohammed Tadhafur Program

Ms. Asma Mohammed, 19, has never visualized the moment she would find herself a mother of a five-year-old girl, yet divorced, her father died before, and she had to make ends meet for herself, her mother and her sister. Thrown into this path of struggle and patience, Ms. Asma has never given up. She made the right decision to change her life for better and started to learn sewing and made her way up to tailoring women’s clothes and selling their accessories in every gathering she could meet women. She was not happy to see that some women looking down upon her as a woman selling stuff of less quality and yet she was doing her best to market her products.
